Day 12 of our series on "Shegepromax: The Challenges of Starting and Running an NGO in Nigeria," focusing on Mental Health and Well-Being.
With rising mental health challenges, it is essential for NGOs to prioritize mental health initiatives to support individuals and communities effectively.
Key Insights on Mental Health in Nigeria
Prevalence of Mental Health Conditions: According to the World Health Organization, over 30% of Nigeria's population lives with a mental health condition, yet less than 10% have access to treatment due to stigma, financial barriers, and a shortage of mental health professionals.
Youth Focus: The Mentally Aware Nigeria Initiative (MANI) is Nigeria’s largest youth-run mental health organization, providing support to over 40,000 individuals, with more than 80% of them aged between 10 and 25. This highlights the urgent need for youth-centered mental health programs.
Crisis Support Services: MANI has become the largest provider of crisis support services in Nigeria, demonstrating the effectiveness of community-based approaches in addressing mental health issues. They run conversation cafes across 18 states, educating over 1,000 young people monthly about mental health.
Impact of Stigma: Stigma remains one of the biggest barriers to seeking help. Organizations like Gede Foundation work tirelessly to break down these taboos and promote awareness about mental health issues, advocating for policy changes that support mental health reforms.
Community Engagement: Initiatives like Idimma train lay counselors within communities to provide basic mental health support. With suicide rates alarmingly high—one person dies by suicide every 40 seconds globally—community-based interventions are crucial for early detection and support.
Why This Matters?
Promoting mental health is not just a moral obligation; it’s essential for building resilient communities. By prioritizing mental well-being, NGOs can foster environments where individuals feel safe seeking help without fear of discrimination.
